Hospital costs charged to Medicare vary a lot. Urban teaching hospitals claim they have to charge more because of complex cases. However, when the government initiated payment by diagnosis, just the low average, hospitals responded with computer programs making fake DRGs. Now they claim the extra expenses of teaching medicine justify higher costs. However, hospitals often negotiate much lower costs with private insurers. It would be best if the government paid those teaching costs separately and forced hospitals to be accountable for them separately, rather than lumping them in with other Medicare and Medicaid costs. The objection comes from hospital unions as well, that medical employment law advice is one of the few areas that has grown during this recession, and cuts would mean lost jobs. But it would be better to encourage productivity rather than employment at wasteful activities. The return in increased health at lower cost hasn’t been there for added employment or, in many cases, medical technology. If the government simply paid less, then medical providers would have to figure out why and what to do about it. It might not be a cut in benefits but rather improvement in efficiency.

The Libertarian party in Alaska are just a bunch of Republicans who do not want to pay taxes, so they thought that this was a good idea. It lost steam after everybody figured them out back in the 70′s and 80′s. People also do not realize that most of Alaska’s income comes from the Permenant Fund, the monies invested from the 1/8th share that the Alaska people get for their oil on the North Slope of Alaska that they gave to oil companies to develop. This fund has been invested all over the world. Another thing that most people don’t realize is that Alaska is so big that the taxpayers alone of Alaska could not support the state, so it is vital to have the Permanent Fund as well as Federal government help. The break away parties there believe that the US could pay for the use of their considerable bases there to help support the place. Lisa Markowski’s father was a prominant banker in Alaska who bought his way into politics!

It cost me 200K to send my daughter to MIT. What did it get her? A full ride with stipend and heath insurance at Harvard, where she’ll get her PhD this upcoming November. She’s helped to develop new targeted cancer therapies, and is in great demand. The sky is the limit as far as job prospects and future compensation are concerned.

It cost me 200K to send my son to Carnegie Mellon. What did it get him? He was a 4-year starter on the soccer team and a captain (and had a fantastic time). He immediately landed a good job that recoups my 200K in less than three years. And he’s on a career track that–for the good ones, and he is–pays seven (or more) figures. His friends from lesser schools are looking for work.

My teen advice to you moms and dads out there with bright kids: don’t be cheap.

My Take On “Alan Blinder: The GOP Myth of ‘Job”

It just amazes me how many people read this article and apply so much that was never said or take so much out of context — not to mention adding a list of crazy stories that are also not representative of government, business or the economy and are far off the article’s subject (jobs and careers). Somehow everyone wants to read into Mr. Blinder a lot more than he is saying. He is talking about jobs (not all the other subjects here brought up here), and his conjecture is that given the current situation cutting spending does not create jobs. He provides a pretty good argument (though I don’t agree with it all). He is not addressing deficits, or wasteful practices, or the universe of problems and concern — he is addressing jobs. His conclusion is that less spending means less jobs and unless someone can demonstrate how spending will otherwise be increased in the economy (beyond wishful thinking), then the fact is that spending cuts (or no tax cuts as he proposes) will increase unemployment.

Here we go again. They bait consumer advices offering unlimited data plans and then when enough people bite and become dependent on the technology they want to change the rules of the game entirely. The telco companies rake in billions of dollars in profits from these services but it is still not enough. Now they want to rape the consumer. No one charges you for how long you make a local telephone call at home. You pay a flat rate for the service. The same should be true for broad band. If the telco are having problems with demand then it is probably because they have spent decades pocketing the profits from their operations instead of diverting a part of it to upgrading their capacity. Their whole objective is to do more with less and charge consumer more along the way. No! It is time someone stood up and said NO! Isn’t the FCC supposed to be looking out for the interest of the consumers? It seems to me the head of all these government agencies are in the pockets of the lobbyists. Already ATT my ADSL provider interferes with my data streams when I download software at home. All this because the FCC has sold out the consumer. I know all of you pro company readers on this forum are going to come running to the defense of the telcos. That is because you boneheads all have you money invested in the stocks of these companies. I am an investor also but I am primarily a regular consumer just like everyone else. Consumers need protections of the excesses and greed of the market place.
